Mixed defensive strategy
A box-and-one is a hybrid basketball defense combining zone and man-to-man principles.
Four defenders form a box shape in zone coverage while the fifth defender shadows a single offensive player—typically the opponent's best scorer—wherever he goes: They ran a box-and-one to take their star out of the game.
