Protect the lead
A prevent defense is a defensive strategy in American football, typically used late in a game when protecting a lead.
The defense spreads out to guard against long passes, conceding short gains to prevent quick scores: They went into prevent defense with two minutes left.
Critics joke that it "prevents you from winning" because it can allow opponents to march down the field.
