laying back

Settling into repose

Laying back describes reclining or assuming a relaxed, recumbent position, as in She was laying back on the pillows.

It also conveys adopting a passive or unhurried approach to a situation rather than taking aggressive action: The team was laying back in the first half, waiting for their opponent to tire.

In music, laying back refers to playing slightly behind the beat to create a relaxed, groove-oriented feel.
