preflash
Pre-exposure light pulse
Preflash is a brief burst of light from a camera's flash system immediately before the main flash fires.
The camera uses this preliminary pulse to measure light levels and calculate proper exposure, improving accuracy in automatic flash photography.
Also called pre-flash or evaluative flash.
In other contexts, preflash refers to any preliminary flash or illumination before a main event.
