tack weld
Spot-hold before welding
A tack weld is a small, temporary weld used to hold metal pieces in position before permanent welding.
Tack welds are placed at intervals along a joint to prevent movement or warping during the final weld: She placed tack welds every six inches along the seam.
As a verb, to tack weld is to apply such welds.
