fill flash
Shadow-killing burst light
Fill flash is a photography technique using flash to illuminate shadows in a scene already lit by ambient light.
Rather than serving as the primary light source, the flash "fills in" dark areas—typically on a subject's face when backlit or in harsh sunlight: Use fill flash to eliminate those raccoon eyes from the overhead sun.
