ambient light
Surrounding environmental brightness
Ambient light is the general illumination present in an environment, as opposed to light from a specific directed source.
In photography and film, ambient light means whatever light exists naturally in a scene before adding artificial lighting: We shot the whole film using only ambient light.
The term appears in display technology for screens that adjust brightness based on surrounding conditions.
