prayer wheel

Rotating mantra cylinder

A prayer wheel is a cylindrical device used in Tibetan Buddhism, containing written mantras or prayers that spin when rotated by hand, wind, or water.

Turning the wheel is believed to have the same spiritual benefit as reciting the prayers aloud.

They range from small handheld cylinders to large drums at temple entrances: Pilgrims spun the prayer wheels as they circled the monastery.
