prairie schooners
Pioneer land vessels
Prairie schooners were canvas-covered wagons used by American settlers migrating westward in the 19th century.
The name comes from their resemblance to ships—the white canvas tops billowing like sails as the wagons crossed the vast grass seas of the Great Plains.
Thousands of prairie schooners traveled the Oregon Trail.
