iron horses
Rail-borne steam engines
Iron horse is an old-fashioned or poetic term for a railroad locomotive, from an era when horses were still the primary means of transport and steam engines seemed like powerful mechanical beasts.
The term captures both the power and the strangeness of early rail travel: The iron horse came roaring through the valley.
Now used nostalgically or in historical contexts.
