powerstroke

Piston's working phase

The powerstroke is the phase of an engine cycle when combustion drives the piston downward, generating the force that turns the crankshaft.

In a four-stroke engine, it's the third stroke—after intake and compression, before exhaust.

The term extends to any motion phase that delivers force: the powerstroke of a rowing oar, the powerstroke in a bench press.

Ford's Powerstroke is a line of diesel engines.
