popcorn ceilings
Bumpy overhead texture
Popcorn ceilings are textured ceilings with a bumpy, spray-on finish that resembles popcorn or cottage cheese.
Popular in American homes from the 1950s through the 1980s, they were valued for hiding imperfections and dampening sound.
Now widely considered dated and difficult to clean, they're often scraped off during renovations: The first thing we did was remove that ugly popcorn ceiling.
