police box
Officer's communication booth
A police box is a small structure, typically found on city streets, that historically served as a base for police officers on patrol.
These boxes contained a telephone for communication with headquarters and sometimes a small holding area for detained individuals.
The term is most associated with Britain, where blue police boxes became iconic before being phased out in favor of personal radios.
The design achieved lasting cultural fame through the television series Doctor Who, whose time-traveling TARDIS resembles a 1960s Metropolitan Police box.
