plantation homes
Antebellum estate houses
Plantation homes are the grand residences built on large agricultural estates, particularly in the American South before the Civil War.
These houses—often featuring columned porches, symmetrical facades, and sprawling grounds—were seats of wealth generated by enslaved labor on cotton, tobacco, and sugar plantations.
Today many survive as historic sites or tourist attractions, though their presentation sometimes romanticizes the antebellum era while minimizing the slavery that made them possible: We toured several plantation homes in Louisiana.
