shotgun shacks
Long, thin houses
Shotgun shacks are narrow rectangular houses, typically one room wide, where all rooms are arranged in a straight line from front to back.
The name supposedly comes from the idea that a shotgun blast through the front door could exit the back without hitting a wall.
Common in the American South from the late 19th century, they were affordable housing for poor and working-class families, particularly in Black communities: Blues musicians often came from shotgun shacks in the Delta.
The style has influenced Southern vernacular architecture and carries associations with rural poverty and African American cultural history.
