Clarksdale

Mississippi blues birthplace

Clarksdale is a city in the Mississippi Delta, widely regarded as a birthplace of the blues.

Musicians like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker lived or performed there, and the area's cotton plantations shaped the music that emerged from Black laborers in the early twentieth century.

The city remains a pilgrimage site for blues enthusiasts: We drove to Clarksdale to visit the crossroads where Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul.
