phoneline

Wired voice link

A phoneline is the physical wire or cable connection that carries telephone signals, or the service itself.

In older usage, it referred to the copper wires running to homes and businesses: We need to get a phoneline installed.

The term persists even as landlines fade: The company's phoneline is always busy.

Also spelled as two words: phone line.
