phantom sensation
Feeling absent limbs
Phantom sensation is the perception of feeling in a body part that has been amputated or is no longer present.
The brain continues to receive or generate signals as if the limb still exists, producing sensations ranging from tingling to intense pain.
Years after the amputation, he still felt phantom sensations in his missing fingers.
The term extends to any perception of something absent—a vibrating phone that isn't actually vibrating, or the lingering presence of a removed tooth.
