client-centered

Prioritizing the customer

Client-centered describes an approach that prioritizes the needs, preferences, and goals of the person being served rather than the provider's methods or institutional convenience.

The term originated in psychotherapy with Carl Rogers, whose client-centered therapy let patients guide their own treatment.

It now appears across healthcare, social work, and business: a client-centered practice, client-centered care.

The hyphen is standard but sometimes dropped.
