penstocks

Dam water channels

Penstocks are pipes or channels that control water flow, particularly in hydroelectric systems where they carry water from a reservoir to turbines.

The term also applies to sluice gates that regulate water levels in canals or millraces.

The dam's penstocks were opened to release excess water.

The word combines pen (enclosure) with stock (trunk or main body).
