peatbog

Acidic sphagnum marsh

A peatbog is a wetland where decomposing plant matter accumulates as peat—a dense, waterlogged soil formed over thousands of years.

Peatbogs are acidic and low in oxygen, which preserves organic material remarkably well; ancient human remains and artifacts have been recovered intact from them.

Also spelled as two words: peat bog.
