patrilocal

Living with in-laws

Patrilocal describes a marriage custom where a couple lives with or near the husband's family.

The term appears in anthropology to classify kinship and residence patterns across cultures: In patrilocal societies, brides leave their natal homes to join their husband's household.

The opposite is matrilocal, where couples settle with the wife's family.
