passed ball
Catcher's costly mishandle
A passed ball in baseball is a pitch that the catcher should have caught but fails to handle, allowing baserunners to advance.
The official scorer judges whether the pitch was reasonably catchable—if not, it's ruled a wild pitch instead.
The runner scored from third on a passed ball.
Passed balls are charged to the catcher's record.
