parhelic circle

Ring around sun

A parhelic circle is a rare optical phenomenon: a white horizontal ring appearing at the same altitude as the sun, sometimes extending all the way around the sky.

It forms when sunlight reflects off ice crystals in the atmosphere.

Sundogs and other bright spots often appear along its arc.
