overtorquing

Twisting too hard

Overtorquing is applying too much rotational force when tightening a fastener—a bolt, screw, or nut.

The result can be stripped threads, cracked materials, or warped components: Overtorquing the lug nuts can damage the brake rotor.

The term appears in automotive, plumbing, and mechanical contexts where torque specifications matter.
