overseed
Seed existing turf
To overseed is to sow grass seed over an existing lawn, usually to thicken sparse turf or introduce a different variety: We overseed with ryegrass every fall.
The practice repairs bare patches and maintains density without tearing up the whole lawn.
Can also mean simply to sow too much seed.
