net loss
Expenses exceeded revenue
A net loss is the amount by which expenses exceed income over a given period—the opposite of net profit.
Companies report a net loss when costs, taxes, and other deductions outweigh revenue: The startup posted a net loss of $2 million in its first year.
The term extends beyond business to any situation where the final tally shows a deficit: After all the trades, it was a net loss for the team.
