overdyeing

Coloring already-tinted fabric

Overdyeing is the process of dyeing fabric or yarn that has already been dyed, adding a new color over the existing one.

The technique creates complex or muted tones that can't be achieved with a single dye bath: She overdyed the faded blue shirt with yellow to get green.

Overdyeing can refresh worn garments or intentionally blend colors for artistic effect.
