Processing after production
Aftertreatment refers to processing that occurs after a primary treatment or manufacturing step.
Most commonly, it describes systems in diesel vehicles that reduce harmful emissions—catalytic converters, particulate filters, and similar equipment that clean exhaust gases after combustion: The truck's aftertreatment system needed replacement.
The term also appears in water treatment, textile finishing, and other industrial contexts where secondary processing refines an initial result.
