orality

Speech over text

Orality refers to the quality or condition of being spoken rather than written.

In cultural and literary studies, it describes societies or traditions that transmit knowledge, history, and art through speech: Homer's epics emerged from a tradition of orality.

The term also appears in psychoanalytic contexts referring to the mouth-centered phase of infant development, and in discussions of sexual practices involving the mouth.
