fansubbing

Unofficial translation work

Fansubbing is the practice of creating unofficial subtitles for foreign media—typically anime, television dramas, or films—and distributing them online.

Amateur translators produce fansubs when official translations don't exist or arrive too slowly for eager fans: I watched the series through fansubbing groups before it got licensed.

The practice exists in legal gray areas, as it involves copyrighted material, but fansubbing communities often consider their work promotional rather than piracy.
