oil barrel
Crude storage cylinder
An oil barrel is the standard unit for measuring crude oil, equal to 42 U.S. gallons or about 159 liters.
Oil prices are quoted per barrel: Crude rose to $80 a barrel.
The measurement dates to early Pennsylvania oil fields, where wooden barrels of that size were used for transport.
Though oil now moves through pipelines and tankers, the barrel remains the industry's standard unit.
