oblates
Equatorially bulging shapes
Oblates are persons dedicated to religious life, particularly in the Catholic tradition.
The term applies both to children given by their parents to be raised in monasteries and to lay people who affiliate with a religious order without taking full vows.
An oblate is also a geometric shape—a sphere flattened at the poles, like Earth: The planet's oblate form results from its rotation.
