nutrient depletion

Fertility running out

Nutrient depletion is the loss or exhaustion of essential nutrients from a system.

Soil suffers nutrient depletion when crops extract more minerals than are replaced: Years of intensive farming led to severe nutrient depletion.

The term also applies to food processing that strips vitamins and minerals, or to bodily conditions where nutrients are inadequately absorbed or rapidly consumed.
