note passing
Silent student communication
Note passing is the covert exchange of written messages, typically in settings where communication is restricted—classrooms, meetings, courtrooms.
The practice is associated especially with schoolchildren sending folded slips of paper to friends during class: She got caught note passing during the lecture.
The term sometimes extends to any furtive written communication.
