neon lamp
Gas discharge light
A neon lamp is a glass tube filled with neon gas that glows bright orange-red when electrified.
Other gases produce different colors—argon glows blue, mercury vapor green—but "neon" has become the generic term for all such lighting.
Neon lamps defined the visual language of mid-century signage: The neon lamp flickered above the diner.
