fluorescent tube

Long glass bulb

A fluorescent tube is a cylindrical glass lamp that produces light when electricity excites mercury vapor inside, causing a phosphor coating on the inner surface to glow.

These tubes are far more energy-efficient than incandescent bulbs and were the standard lighting in offices, schools, and commercial buildings throughout the late twentieth century.

The fluorescent tubes in the break room keep flickering.

They are increasingly being replaced by LED alternatives.
