navigation techniques
Ways to navigate
Navigation techniques are methods for determining position and plotting a course from one place to another.
Traditional techniques include celestial navigation (using stars and sun), dead reckoning (calculating position from speed and direction), and pilotage (following landmarks).
Modern techniques rely on GPS, radar, and electronic charts.
The term applies equally to maritime, aviation, and land travel: The hikers practiced basic navigation techniques before attempting the backcountry route.
