national pastime

Diamonds and innings

A national pastime is an activity or sport so widely enjoyed in a country that it becomes part of the cultural identity.

In the United States, the phrase almost always refers to baseball: Baseball is America's national pastime.

The term can apply to other countries' signature pursuits—cricket in India, soccer in Brazil—or be used ironically for any widespread habit: Complaining about the weather is the British national pastime.
