national interests
A nation's concerns
National interests are the goals and priorities a country pursues to protect its security, prosperity, and influence.
The term appears constantly in foreign policy discussions: The treaty serves our national interests, We must put national interests first.
What constitutes national interests is often contested—politicians invoke the phrase to justify everything from trade deals to military intervention, sometimes masking narrower agendas behind the collective "we."
