muzzle loading

Muzzle loading describes firearms loaded through the barrel's open end rather than from the breech.

Before the mid-19th century, all guns were muzzle-loading—powder and projectile rammed down the barrel with a rod.

The term now distinguishes antique weapons and their replicas from modern cartridge firearms: a muzzle-loading rifle, muzzle-loading season (hunting periods reserved for such weapons).
