flunk

Not pass muster

Flunk means to fail, especially an academic test or course: I flunked chemistry twice.

A teacher can flunk a student by giving a failing grade.

To flunk out is to be dismissed from school for poor performance.

The word is informal and predominantly American.

It carries a blunt, slightly shameful connotation that "fail" lacks.
