microsatellites

DNA repeat sequences

Microsatellites are short, repetitive sequences of DNA scattered throughout genomes, typically two to six base pairs repeated dozens of times.

Because these sequences vary highly between individuals, they serve as genetic markers for DNA fingerprinting, paternity testing, and population studies: The forensic lab analyzed microsatellites from the crime scene.

Also called short tandem repeats (STRs).

Separately, microsatellites are very small artificial satellites, typically under 100 kilograms, used for research, communication, or Earth observation.
