microfilters

Miniature separation membranes

Microfilters are small devices that separate signals by frequency, most commonly used to split telephone and internet signals on a DSL line.

Without a microfilter, the frequencies interfere with each other, causing static on phone calls or degraded internet performance.

The term also applies to fine filtration devices in other contexts—coffee machines, aquariums, medical equipment—where particles need screening at a microscopic level.
