methylene

Two-hydrogen carbon group

Methylene is a chemical unit consisting of one carbon atom bonded to two hydrogen atoms (CH₂).

It appears frequently in organic chemistry nomenclature: methylene chloride, methylene blue.

A methylene group links carbon chains in larger molecules.

The term also names the highly reactive molecule CH₂ itself, which exists only briefly before combining with other substances.
