messianic figure
Expected divine liberator
A messianic figure is someone regarded as a savior or liberator, expected to rescue a group from suffering or lead them to a promised future.
The term derives from the Jewish concept of the Messiah but applies broadly to political, religious, or cultural leaders invested with outsized hopes: The movement rallied around him as a messianic figure.
Often carries skeptical undertones when applied to secular leaders.
