merchant bank

Business lending institution

A merchant bank is a financial institution that provides services to businesses rather than individuals—underwriting securities, arranging mergers and acquisitions, managing investments, and advising on corporate finance.

The term is more common in British English; in American usage, investment bank covers similar territory.

Merchant banks historically financed international trade, which explains the name.
