building societies
Mutual mortgage institutions
Building societies are financial institutions, mainly British, that originally existed to pool savings and provide mortgages to members.
They developed as cooperatives—members deposited money and could borrow against collective funds to buy homes.
Though now similar to banks, building societies remain member-owned rather than shareholder-owned: I've had my savings with the same building society for twenty years.
The singular is building society.
