mercantilists
Gold-hoarding economic theorists
Mercantilists are advocates of mercantilism, the economic theory dominant in Europe from the 16th to 18th centuries holding that national wealth depends on accumulating gold and silver through trade surpluses.
The term now often appears critically, describing those who favor protectionism or view trade as zero-sum: The mercantilists in Congress pushed for higher tariffs.
