free traders
Anti-tariff commerce supporters
Free traders are advocates of free trade—the economic policy that opposes tariffs, quotas, and other government restrictions on international commerce.
The term describes both individuals who support such policies and, historically, merchants or ships engaged in unrestricted trade.
In political contexts, free traders often clash with protectionists who favor shielding domestic industries from foreign competition.
The free traders in Parliament argued that lowering tariffs would benefit consumers.
